Like many new moms, when I first started breastfeeding, I wasn’t really sure if I even needed nursing clothes.
Once I realized I planned to nurse as long as possible and wanted to invest in some high-quality nursing clothes, I had no idea where to start.
It can be challenging to find high-quality, comfortable, and cute nursing clothes that are also super functional.
Luckily I found Undercover Mama, which quickly became my absolute favorite company for nursing clothes.

What are nursing shirts and tank tops?
First off, it’s helpful to understand what nursing shirts and tanks even are, and why they might be helpful for you.
Nursing clothes are designed for easy access to breastfeeding and usually allow you to nurse without exposing your breasts, stomach, back, or sides.
Essentially, they are shirts and tank tops designed with clips you can unclasp to pull down a small portion of the fabric. This allows your baby to nurse on one breast without exposing any other portion of your body.
Certain styles of nursing shirts can also include an extra layer of fabric. This can be used for additional covering over your baby while nursing to provide increased privacy while nursing in public.
Do you need specific nursing clothes?
This was one of my biggest questions when I started breastfeeding.
Did I need special clothes for breastfeeding or could I make do with my normal tank tops and shirts?
Although nursing shirts and tank tops make nursing easier and help me and lots of other moms feel much more comfortable nursing in public, you can use normal clothes if that’s what you prefer.
However, if any of these apply to you, I do think you would strongly benefit from a few specific nursing tops.
- Would you prefer clothing that makes it easier and more convenient to latch your baby and do one-handed nursing?
- Do you feel anxious about breastfeeding your baby in public?
- Do you feel self-conscious at the thought of the possibility that your side, stomach, breast, or back might be exposed while nursing?
- Are you doing a lot of pumping and want a few shirts that will help you feel more covered during your pumping sessions?
- Are you tired of trying to figure out the two shirt method and always feel a little clumsy when you try to latch your baby?
- Are you interested in fashion and love the idea of adding special nursing clothes to your wardrobe while you are breastfeeding?
I went the first few months without any nursing clothes, and it worked okay.
But once I invested in a few clothes specifically designed for breastfeeding, I couldn’t believe how much easier nursing was, and how much more comfortable and confident I felt.
So if any of these apply, I do recommend trying a couple of nursing tank tops and shirts to see what you think.
What is Undercover Mama?
Undercover Mama was founded by Elena and Elisa who have 12 kids between the two of them!
They are passionate about designing fun, fashionable, and functional clothing that makes breastfeeding and pumping easier for new moms.
They developed their nursing tank top with it’s patented easy one-handed nursing access to be a complete game changer for breastfeeding moms.
This one-handed nursing access is exactly what made me fall completely in love with their clothes because it makes it so much easier to latch my baby while I’m out in public or multitasking with different errands around the house.
What’s Unique about Undercover Mama Tank Tops?
In my opinion, the one-handed nursing access and dual hook options are what make these nursing tank tops my top recommendation for nursing clothes.
Every Undercover Mama nursing tank is designed with two types of clasps, the hook attachment and the loop attachment.
You don’t need to disassemble to switch between the two or change out the hook you’re using. Instead, you can easily use the option you want and move aside the one you don’t need right now.
Then, depending on the bra that you’re wearing and the hook you like best, you can switch between the two to use whichever makes nursing easiest for you..
I have tested this out with so many different nursing bras and regular bras and it is incredibly versatile. The only bra style I don’t think it would work with is strapless bras, since it wouldn’t have anything to connect to.
Luckily, strappless bras haven’t been part of my nursing attire, so this isn’t a concern at all for me.
I was easily able to attach it to each bra that I tried and it makes it so easy to quickly unclasp the latch and begin nursing. I can even do one handed nursing with my non-dominant hand because of how smooth this system works for me.
What Makes Undercover Mama Nursing Shirts and Dresses Special?
Luckily, Undercover Mama knows that their clasp system makes them unique, so they continue to use these in all of their shirts and dresses.
Most, if not all, of their breastfeeding shirts and dresses also include an additional panel of fabric. This is designed to blend in with your shirt while you are wearing it normally, but provide an extra layer of covering over your baby if you prefer more private nursing.
And let me tell you, it is incredible!
I have fumbled so much with different blankets and nursing covers. And they all worked eventually, but really tested my coordination while I tried to figure out how to balance this extra blanket, keep my baby from kicking it off of me, and nurse without feeling over-exposed while nursing.
Once I tried out the Undercover Mama nursing shirt, this instantly became so much easier for me.
I was able to easily unlatch the clasp with one hand, sneak my baby’s head underneath the extra panel in my nursing shirt, and then latch and nurse him without anyone around me even knowing that I was breastfeeding.
Personally, I think this system is so slick and much easier than trying to balance extra blankets or always using the two-shirt method to try and stay covered up while I’m nursing.
How do you use the Undercover Mama Dual Clasp System?
You might think that that Undercover Mama clasp system sounds complicated, but it is so easy!
Every time you wear your Undercover Mama top, you can choose if you want to use the hook or the loop attachment.
How does the Undercover Mama hook attachment work?
The hook is super simple. You just slide your bra strap through the hook to attach it and you’re good to go!
If you’re using this with a nursing bra, you’ll attach the hook below the clasp of your nursing bra. Then when you’re ready to nurse, unhook your nursing bra and you can easily pull down your bra and tank top to nurse your baby.
The hook also works really well with normal bras when I either run out of nursing bras or need to use a regular bra with my outfit for some reason. You simply slide the hook over your bra strap. When you’re ready to nurse, unhook your tank and pull that side down. Then adjust your bra so that you can easily nurse your little one.
I’ve also found that this works pretty well with normal sports bras, which I think is unique for nursing clothes since they’re not always compatible. Slide the hook over your sports bra strap. It probably won’t fit all the way around like a normal bra, but always stays really secure for me. Then you can pull down the tank and adjust your sports bra when you’re ready to nurse.
How does the Undercover Mama loop attachment work?
At first, I thought the loop was complicated, but it is so simple to use!
When you want to use this option, pull the loop attachment to the front and fold down the clasp in the back.
Unclasp your nursing tank top and slide the loop of your Undercover Mama top over the clasp. Pull it down a little so it’s nice and snug and then you’re good to go!
This attachment is my favorite when I’m wearing nursing bras. Instead of unclipping my nursing shirt and then my nursing bra, I can easily unclip them both together.
The hook attachment stays firmly in place even after frequent clasping and unclapsing throughout the day.
Both the hook and loop attachment make it easy to use these tops with any bra option. And I love how easy it is to combine the hooks so I don’t have fumble with so many clasps and hooks when I’m trying to nurse.
How are Undercover Mama nursing clothes helpful for pumping?
Between exclusive pumping for three months while my baby refused to latch and then lots of pumping sessions when I went back to work, I spent a lot of time attached to my pump.
And my least favorite thing about wearing normal clothes while pumping was that I always felt like my stomach was super exposed, which made me feel more uncomfortable (and usually a little cold!) each time I pumped.
Undercover Mama tanks are great for pumping, because you can wear your normal shirt on top.
When you’re ready to pump, you just unlatch both sides of your tank top and attach your pump. Your Undercover Mama tank keeps your stomach and back covered and you can slide your shirt over your breast pump to be even more covered.
Undercover Mama shirts and dresses are also great for pumping for the same reason.
You can easily unclasp your top and start pumping. Your stomach will stay covered and you can use the extra panel to drape over your pump to feel covered and private each time you pump.
What do I love about Undercover Mama Nursing Clothes?
Dual Clasp System:
My favorite thing about Undercover Mama is their dual clasp system, because it truly makes it so easy to unclasp and latch your baby.
The first time I wore my nursing top, I literally shouted at my husband, “Oh my gosh! Did you see how easy that was! I can finally use one hand to latch [our baby] without feeling like I’m going to drop him!” (My husband’s response was perfect – “That’s great, but just how many times have you almost dropped him??”)
Every item I have gotten from Undercover Mama is so soft, which is a huge perk for me! The soft fabric makes them super cozy for both me and my baby throughout the day.
Multiple colors and shirt designs:
Undercover Mama has several different color options available for each of their styles and a handful of different designs for their tanks, shirts, and dresses.
Their style is adorable and the variety of their clothes is a big perk for anyone looking to dip their toes and buy a couple of nursing tops or finish off their nursing wardrobe with a handful of pieces.
Loose and Comfortable fit for everyday wear:
I love that the Undercover Mama clothes are all true to fit.
They have a style guide to help you pick the best option and different pictures of women in each of the different sizes to help you pick the best size right away.
Personally, I don’t like clothing that is too tight or form fitting, so I love that the Undercover Mama nursing clothes are loose and flowy, so they are comfortable to wear all day every day.
Because I was between sizes and really don’t like clothes that are too tight, I sized up one size and absolutely love the fit of everything I’ve gotten from them.
Works great with nursing bras and regular bras:
I’ve tried out my tank and shirts with countless different bras, both nursing bras and normal bras, and the clasp system has worked with every single well.
It stays latched on throughout the day and then is easy to quickly remove when I’m ready to nurse my baby.
Full coverage and great for public nursing:
Having full coverage so I am comfortable nursing in public is an absolute must-have for me. And Undercover Mama tops are perfect for this.
The Undercover Mama nursing shirts make it easy to latch your baby and then stay covered with the extra panel system, ensuring that I never have any stomach or back showing or feel like my breast is exposed while breastfeeding.
The tanks are awesome, because they allow you to turn any shirt into a nursing shirt. With the Undercover Mama tank tops, I can wear my normal shirt on top. When I’m ready to nurse, I just pull up my shirt and unclasp my nursing tank. Then I can easily and privately nurse without ever feeling like I have too much skin showing or without having to buy tons and tons of new clothes.
Eliminates the need for the two-shirt method:
The two-shirt method works, and I certainly paired my Undercover Mama tanks with lots of my normal clothes to rock the two-shirt method for nursing.
However, I love the Undercover Mama nursing shirts and dresses for days when I don’t feel like trying to finagle multiple shirts and want nursing access to be as easy as possible.
Easiest one handed nursing access:
One-handed access to nursing is easier with Undercover Mama tops than any other nursing top I have tried so far.
The clasp system and the extra panel in the tops makes it so incredibly easy to unclaps and start nursing, while staying covered every step of the way.
For me, it took out a lot of stress of having to balance unclasping my nursing bra, unhooking my tank top, pulling up my shirt without pulling up too much, and keeping a blanket perfectly perched over us, all while holding a squirming, hungry baby who wanted to latch as quickly as possible.
Cons of Undercover Mama Nursing Clothing:
Looks like a nursing shirt:
When I wear my Undercover Mama tops, I can tell that they are nursing tops since the top panel doesn’t go down long enough to look like a natural extra layer of fabric.
Now, I might just be over sensitive to what nursing tops look like because my husband insists that it looks like a normal shirt and he wouldn’t know the difference if I hadn’t specifically pointed it out to him.
Tank top back can come down a little throughout the day:
Because the Undercover Mama nursing tank is strapless and designed to attach to your bra, the back can slide down a little throughout the day.
This has never been an issue for me. I always felt covered and was never worried that it was going to slide down too far, but I did notice that it would shift a little in the back throughout the day.
Undercover Mama nursing tanks, shirts, and dresses are incredibly comfortable, stylish, and very functional to make nursing much easier and more comfortable for you.
Their clasp system is incredibly versatile and works with almost any other bra. Plus, it makes one-handed nursing go much more smoothly.
I highly recommend Undercover mama nursing tops for any mom who is breastfeeding or pumping.
I firmly believe even frugal mamas like me will think they are super convenient and worth stocking up on a couple of different options.
